Common Illnesses Affecting Children

Children are prone to a wide range of health maladies; some are infectious while others are not. Unfortunately, it is impossible to write down all of them in one article. Here are some of the most common pediatric illnesses.

Bronchiolitis

Did you know this condition, characterized by inflammation of the airways, affects children under 12 months old? Bronchiolitis is caused by common viruses that affect the upper respiratory regions such as influenza, cough, runny nose and fever. Its common symptom include wheezing, which is similar to that in asthma.

Ear Infections

A commonly infected area of the ear are the Eustachian tubes, which serve as drains for any fluid that accumulates along the areas near the inner ears and throat. Fluid buildup can lead to symptomatic infection, which is why the fluid needs to be drained; otherwise, it can cause fever and ear pain.

Diseases of the Mouth, Hand and Foot

Common during summer and early fall, this condition usually lasts about 10 days and causes sore throat, fever and blisters in the mouth or on the hands or soles of the feet. While this condition doesn’t really require treatment, doctors may prescribe pain relievers.

Pinkeye

Medically known as conjunctivitis, this is a contagious disease that children can get from schoolmates. Thankfully, this condition usually resolves within five days even without medical intervention.

Chickenpox

Caused by the varicella virus, this disease is a common cause for hospitalization in children. In case of complications, symptoms may include pneumonia and bacterial skin infections.

Measles

Due to routine vaccinations, measles outbreak has become less common now. Its symptoms include rash on the face, body, hands and feet. This may subsist for about a week.

Staph Infection

This skin infection is characterized by boils and abscesses, which are caused by the antibiotic-resistant strain known as methicillin-resistant Staph aureus. If left untreated, it could lead to life-threatening infections.
