Regular Physical Activity Contributes to Better Health in Kids

Wondering if exercise is good for your kids? The answer is a resounding yes. According to pediatric experts, physical activity, ranging from moderate to vigorous intensity, can keep children healthy.

Parents of school-age children are highly encouraged to let their kids engage in physical activity for at least 60 minutes each day. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Agriculture have adopted this recommendation. This recommendation is further elaborated that children aged 2 years old and older should partake in exercise for most days in a week but preferably every day.

As to what moderate to vigorous intensity is, it includes physical activities like jumping rope, brisk walking and little bit of running. Sports activities like soccer and basketball also constitute physical activities that are moderate to vigorous in level.

Pediatric experts noted that the level of physical activity that children today are enjoying is significantly lower than that enjoyed by kids of decades ago. According to these experts, this drastic reduction in physical activity is largely due to technological developments like video games. With the increase in popularity of digital-related activities, children today are not as physically active as those 10 to 20 years ago.

To achieve the 60-minute physical activity requirement, schools are encouraged to incorporate daily physical education classes that include exercises for kids; this may also be combined with after-school sports programs as well as recess activities. Participation of children in community sports programs is also highly encouraged.
