DIY Solutions for Children’s Colds and Flu

Cold-weather season can mean one thing for children: fun! They can look forward to snow, sledding and a whole lot of outdoor fun. But on the downside, the cold weather can also mean more: colds, flu, fever and sore throat.

Here are a couple of remedies you can find in your home to fight these illnesses.

If your children are afflicted with the common cold, here are some tips to comfort and make them feel better. First off, let them get rest. It allows their body and immune system to focus on getting well. If it’s a school day, give them a day off and keep them warm and rested at home.

Water really helps. It replenishes lost fluids while loosening mucus. Speak with a pediatrician about over-the-counter medications you can use. These may include decongestants, antihistamines and cough medicines.

Kids with flu also need rest. When the flu is accompanied by a sore throat, the best thing you can do is prepare warm water with salt. Let the kids gargle with this saline solution, as the saltwater helps alleviate discomfort. Hydration is also key to tackling the flu. The usual medications for flu include ibuprofen and acetaminophen, which relieve aches. However, the use of aspirin should be avoided in children under the age of 18.

Fever is the body’s way of fending off an infection. To help the immune system and make your children feel better, you can use ibuprofen or acetaminophen. As mentioned, aspirin is not ideal for kids under 18. Hydration is also crucial. Make sure they drink lots of fluid. If the fever is high, giving them a sponge bath with lukewarm water will help relieve the discomfort.
